Therapy Services for people who are ready for support.

Individual, couples, and group therapy, in person and virtual in the Kawartha Lakes area, Peterborough, Lakefield, and virtual across Ontario.

Therapy is where change begins.

If you feel like you are simply getting by, managing the best you can, and showing up, but something isn’t working anymore, therapy is a step in the right direction.

Maybe you’re reacting in ways that don’t feel like you. Maybe everything feels harder than it should. Maybe you’ve tried to figure it out — on your own, or with support — and you’re still in the same place.

That’s often a sign that something underneath needs to be understood before anything genuinely shifts.

Here, you will find a personalized approach to therapy that draws from various effective modalities and tailored to you in each session, so you receive the support you uniquely need to move forward.

Couples therapy in Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes Ontario

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy is for people in relationships who want to address and regain their connection, love and passion for and amongst each other. Relationships include married, common-law, same-sex, polyamorous, those living together or separately. We work together, all of us, to identify your concerns, build a trust and safe space as a team and move forward towards change and healing.

Group therapy — virtual and in-person group support in Ontario

Group Therapy

Group therapy is connecting with a supportive community where you learn from each other, share and transform together. It can be in addition to individual or couples therapy, or on its own, depending on your personal needs.

You don’t have to have it all figured out to start.

Many of the themes I see in my practice begin with some of the following symptoms:

  • You feel like you’re managing on the outside, but internally you’re stretched thin
  • You’ve been trying to address things — on your own or with support — but a cycle keeps repeating
  • You want to understand what’s actually driving things  — the root cause, not just find a way to cope
  • You’re willing to show up and do the work, even if you’re not sure what that looks like yet
  • You want someone who listens first and adapts to what you need — not a fixed method
  • You feel uncertain, scared, and curious all at the same time – you want someone to listen

Your inner dialogue might sound something like this:

While this is not an exhaustive list, many people I see come in silently repeating these statements to themselves:

  • “I don’t feel like myself anymore, and I can’t really understand why.”
  • “Everything feels harder than it should.”
  • “I’m reacting in ways that don’t feel like me.”
  • “I’m exhausted. I keep repeating the same cycle.”
  • “I’m not at peace. I don’t know where to start.”
  • “I wish things could be like they used to be when….”
  • “I’ve got a lot of weight on my shoulders and nowhere to put it.”
  • “All we do is argue now.”
  • “He/she doesn’t listen, I don’t feel like he/she hears me anymore.”

If any of these statements sound like you, you are not alone.

We can begin from here, or wherever you are at, together.

Many people arrive without a diagnosis and without certainty about what kind of support they need. That’s fine — figuring that out together is part of the process.

As a psychotherapist, I’m not able to provide a formal diagnosis. What I can do is listen carefully, notice what’s showing up, and help you understand whether a medical or psychiatric assessment might be worth exploring. I’m often the first person someone talks to. From there, we figure out together what else, if anything, is needed.

    Therapeutic Approaches

In sessions, I don’t lead with one method and apply it to you. I listen first, observe what’s happening, and draw from whatever is most relevant and applicable. I select from a range of evidence-based approaches — including C-DBT, Gottman-informed, CBT, MBCT, EFIT/EFCT (certification in progress),  Mindful Self-Compassion, Music therapy, Narrative therapy, mindfulness-based methods, and Mindful-Self-Compassion — and apply what’s most useful in the moment. The approach is always adapted to you, not the other way around.

    Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

An evidence-based, structured approach to psychotherapy that leverages skills from four core modules to help with intense emotions, reactive patterns, and the push-pull between wanting things to change and feeling unable to.

    Relationship-Focused Couples Therapy

A research-based approach for couples that focuses on strengthening relationships by focusing on learning about intimacy, respect and affection while managing conflict. You learn how you communicate, repair conflicts, and rebuild trust. This works whether the relationship is in crisis or just quietly disconnected.

    Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC)

The practice of learning how to direct kindness, care, support, and understanding to oneself during times of suffering, difficulty, failure, and criticism. Especially useful if your inner voice is your harshest critic — and you’re tired of holding yourself to a standard you’d never apply to someone else.

Emotion Focused Therapy - Individuals and Couples - EFIT and EFCT

An evidence-based psychotherapy that supports individuals and couples through their healing by exploring emotions as the center of experiences and decision-making. To change emotions, it is essential to accept and experience them. There is a focus on attachment theory and action orientation with real-time processing in sessions.

    Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

A goal-oriented form of structured therapy that changes negative thought patterns and behaviours with a focus on the connection between thoughts, feelings and actions to improve well-being. It is action-oriented, leverages skills, and follows a structured format.

    Mindful Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (M-CBT)

Similar to CBT with an emphasis on mindfulness strategies that are designed to support observing negative thoughts and bodily sensations in the absence of judgment. The activities introduced have significant benefits for those with depression, anxiety, and other diagnosed mental health disorders.

    Music Therapy

Using music interventions like listening, singing, playing instruments, or songs to accomplish goals such as reducing stress, alleviating pain, improving communication, and others.

    Narrative Therapy

Non-blaming approach to psychotherapy that helps to re-author or re-story one’s life by identifying values, strengths, and skills to counteract problems in original stories.

    Mindfulness-Based Approaches

Develops the ability to notice what’s happening inside — thoughts, emotions, physical sensations — without being swept away by them. Woven through most of the work rather than used as a standalone method.

I’ll walk alongside you through change.

Therapy can be a circle of care.

Therapy doesn’t have to be just the two of us.

Some people I work with enjoy a team-based approach. They have a doctor, a psychiatrist, a physiotherapist, or a chiropractor already involved in their care. Others have cultural or spiritual supports — an elder, a healer, a community figure — who are central to how they understand themselves and what they need. When a client wants those people to be part of the circle of care, I work alongside them.

This is what integrated, team-based care actually means. It’s not a clinical structure — it’s a circle of support that you define. Whoever you want in that circle, we build around that. Sometimes that means I’m collaborating with other practitioners in the background. Sometimes people bring those supports directly into the therapy space itself.

The work doesn’t have to happen in isolation. It can include everyone who matters to your healing.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of commonly asked questions. If you have another question, please contact me via my contact form or book a consultation to discuss further.

What if I’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t help?

That’s more common than you might think — and it’s a fair question to bring. Often the issue isn’t that therapy doesn’t work; it’s that the approach didn’t fit how you think or what you needed. My approach is personalized and adaptive. We figure out together what actually helps you.

    Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes. I offer virtual sessions across Ontario and in-person sessions in the Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough area. Most people find virtual works well; some prefer coming in. We’ll figure out what suits you.

    How long does therapy take?

There’s no fixed timeline. We start with a goal in mind and move toward it together. Some things shift more quickly; others take longer. The aim is always to reach a point where you feel equipped to move forward on your own — with tools and clarity that are yours.

    How long are sessions?

Individual therapy sessions last approximately 60 minutes. Couples therapy is typically booked for 60 minutes but often runs up to 90 minutes. Group therapy ranges depending on the program so please reference the program manual for details.

    What are your hours?

The clinic operates with hours of availability during the daytime, evenings and weekends. Actual availability can be found through the Jane App booking link, however, if you do not find the time you need, please feel free to reach out directly and we can discuss options.  You can reach me at jenjames@doublejtherapy.com.

    What is the cancellation policy?

We have a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you cancel within the 24-hour window, you won’t be charged.

How often will we have sessions?

I offer a very client-centered space and will work with you to find a cadence that meets your needs and our treatment plan. There is no fixed requirement for how often you must come to therapy. I am happy to provide some guidance; however, the decision is up to you. Many clients enjoy starting out with weekly sessions, tapering down over time and landing with a monthly maintenance visit. This is meant to work for you and not add to the stress in your life.

    Do you take insurance?

Psychotherapy is covered by most third-party insurance plans; however, since each plan is different, I recommend that you check with your insurance provider and confirm your specific coverage. The services fall under Registered Psychotherapy. When reviewing your plan, make sure you understand how much coverage you have per year and when your coverage renews. At the end of a session I will provide you an invoice, you will make a payment for the session, and you will be able to submit your receipt to the insurance company for reimbursement.

What if I'm not sure I'm ready?

You don’t need to be ready. You just need to be willing to have a conversation. The consultation is free, there’s no commitment, and nothing is decided in that first call except whether it feels worth continuing. We start from wherever you are.

Relief often begins when you take the first step.

Over time, clients often describe feeling more like themselves again — across different parts of their life, not just in session. Some reconnect with a sense of calm and clarity they hadn’t felt in a long time. Many find themselves building new resources and ways of responding that they can actually maintain, moving from feeling stuck to feeling equipped. And for many, the change becomes a new way of living.

Patterns don’t tend to resolve on their own. The consultation is free, it’s 30 minutes, and it costs nothing to see if this feels right. If you’ve been thinking about reaching out for a while — that thought is worth listening to.
